Alternative Education Institute
The Alternative Education Institute (AEI) is a youth serving program model that assists disconnected, court involved or formerly incarcerated youth between the ages of 18-26 to reconnect with their communities.
Students between the ages of 16 and 17 are enrolled at the discretion of the program director. It is the first ever national service program to affirmatively recruit people with criminal records. AEI engages young people in service and service learning opportunities who are neither working nor in school.
Program participants receive job training, personal guidance from qualified leaders, a modest stipend and educational opportunities.
AEI in Perth Amboy is designed to serve in four areas:
Participants will be able to work towards a GED.
Participants will learn job skills and have the opportunity to participate in vocational/educational opportunities. Also offered is a vocational component focusing on construction. While learning construction skills, participants will gain hands on experience working in their community. In addition, an allowance may be given based on project participation and attendance.
Participants will focus on developing a career plan and develop action steps to achieve their goals.
Participants will focus on character and community development. They will learn how to use their leadership skills to make changes in their lives and their neighborhoods.

- Not in school
- Can work, but must be able to commit to attend classes between 10:00am-3:00pm.
